Genesis
The National Science Centre Delhi is the fourth science centre set up by National Council Of Science Museum after having developed Centre at Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai, It’s unique designers was Sh.APKanvinde, the illustrious architect whodesigned this building to suit the specific requirement of an interactive science centre, Dr SarojGhose,DG; NCSM &Other Director had a long discussion in the design process in making of this a unique Dream castle for one and all.
EarlierIn 1979-1980, the NDMC invited the NCSM to setup a centre at national capital. A venue near Nehru park on Vinay Marg was proposed but considering environmental complications, a plot near Timarpur, Khyber PassInstitutional area was allotted where a small park & Office building was established. However, at the instructions of PMO a centrally located plot at PragatiMaidanwas allotted by Trade Fair Authority of India where present building took its shape.
Simultaneously the National Science Centre started its activityearlier by setting up exhibition – “Space and Mankind” in collaboration with other NASA and JPL, which held at VigyanBhavan and was graced by the president of India. Several other activities like National Science seminar for all the states/UT of country’s school studentswas started. State level winners &young participants all over India even metthe prime minister at her residence.
NSC, Delhi was alsoentrusted to run the exhibition “Energy in Life” at PragatiMaidan which was developed by National Institute of Design, marking its first major presence there. Mobile science exhibitions were launched to reach remote areas of Northern India. The prestigious “festival of India- science exhibition”was organised in the USA with active contribution from Delhi science Centre. The “Space Photography” exhibition was also organised with participation of scientists and astronauts from NASA and JPL. An International Museum conference at CIMUSET was inaugurated at the upcoming science centre building. For the first time a gallery on Fun Science was setup at National Science Centre, building in December,1988. An innovative walk-through Exhibit concept in the “Information Revolution” Gallery was also planned for the centre, which later received the prestigious Dibner Award from the society for the history of technology. The Centre letter setup several interactive exhibits and programmes, including Energy Ball Show, Heritage Gallery, Emerging Technologies, Prehistoric robotic display and hands-on exhibits etc.
The Centre was inaugurated and dedicated to the service of nation by the Prime Minister Shri P. V. Narasimha Rao on 9 January 1992 in august presence of the Union Minister for Human Resource Development Dr. Arjun Singh and several other dignitaries.Thus, the National Science Centre stands as a successful outcome of the vision and sustained effort of the National Council Of Science Museum (NCSM) to establish a premier science communication hub in the National capital which also serve as North zone headquarters of India..Strategically, the Centre has evolved into one of the Asia’s largest science Centre, fulfilling its mandate of engaging and entertaining society through interactive exhibitions, educational activities and outreach program and justifying its popular identity as a “Dream Castle For One And All”.
